If I had a dollar for every time I said “I don’t have a place to work” I could buy myself a lifetime supply of coffee. I have written from my dining room table, my bedroom, Starbucks, Panera, my car at soccer practice … you name it.
I had used the guest room before, but gave it up over the summer when we opened our home to a college soccer player for the local U23 Men’s NC Fusion team. In November, I decided to create my own office sanctuary — in a guest room closet.
Why a closet? When I was in middle school, my bedroom had two closets. My parents converted one of my closets into a walk-in office. I read, drew, wrote and did homework there. I loved it. I wanted to re-create that magic. I also wanted to create a space where I could close off from the rest of the house. A guest room with a closet seemed best. I had everything I needed to create my sanctuary.
I loved the idea of the closet because I could close off my work if I needed to do so. The guest room was perfect. It’s out of the way, gets good sunlight and has a view of the yard. It’s also a great use of space.
I hope this helps you! I know spaces can be found all over houses. I love nothing more than a nook with a book. Keep on writing.
