Week 9’s assignments

1. You have been appointed the public editor or ombudsman for a news organization online. It’s your job to draft a policy covering changes to articles published online, including corrections and clarifications.

How will these be handled?
Staff members will complete a correction form for our records. The form will include:

  • Error (what it was – name misspelled, wrong photo, etc)
  • When (date it ran, date it was corrected)
  • What went wrong (brief description of how it got into print/web)
  • How it was corrected

What will be communicated to site visitors?
Site visitors will see an “About Us” tab. The drop-down menu will include a Corrections tab. Under Corrections, they’ll find information about why printing corrections is essential to the mission and links to:

  • Request a correction
  • View past content with corrections

 2. Policy for attribution of crowd-sourced content
Ncatregister.com’s policy on contributed videos, audio and photos:

  • Credit the person who submitted the content and how it was sent.
    Example: Emily Harris/Email submission
    Caption must be written to explain photo/video/audio.
  • If you’re sourcing off our site, credit us and credit them. Example:
    Emily Harris/Email submission to ncatregister.com

Ncatregsiter.com’s policy on verification from crowd-sourced material:

  • Submission form must be complete with full name, email address, phone number and mailing address. Editors must verify the person is who they say, as with verification of letters to the editor.

3. Create a job description for VP Social Media/News for ncatregsiter.com

We’re looking for a social media fanatic – someone who’s ahead of the digital media curve and eats, sleeps and breathes it and knows why it’s relevant.

Duties:

  • Ncatregister’s VP Social Media/News is tasked with running the daily online news editorial and operations, specifically the reporting, writing, shooting, editing, digital production, broadcast and distribution of online content.
  • S/he will supervise content producers and social media aspects of the brand (blogs, Twitter, Instagram, Four Square, Linked In, YouTube and Facebook).
  • S/he is proactive, self-starting, team-oriented and education-focused.
  • S/he is Mac trained. We’re a Mac shop.
  • S/he constantly thinks of story, platform and project ideas, plus more-efficient systems and processes. And s/he is recognizes teachable moments.
  • S/he will write with wit and be able to communicate across platforms and to students.
  • S/he is understands measurement software to track views/captures and can analyze and communicate such measures to the advertising and branding team.

Experience:

  • Master’s degree in journalism
  • Teaching experience at college level
  • 10+ years journalistic experience in converged newsroom
  • Social media experience
  • Working knowledge of web and mobile production, html coding, SEO

About our company:
Ncatregister.com is the mobile site for The A&T Register, the student newspaper of N.C. A&T State University. The newspaper publishes weekly during the academic year and the website is updated daily. The newspaper’s advisory board seeks to move to the “web first” approach as a way to train students for the 21st century newsroom.
